Crafts Alive: The Gloucestershire Guild at Rodmarton Manor

Crafts Alive at Rodmarton Manor is an exciting opportunity for The Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen to show its outstanding contemporary craftwork in an important heritage setting.
Rodmarton Manor, built and developed by the Biddulph family, is a unique expression of the Arts and Crafts movement; our Guild continues their original vision – promoting fine craftsmanship, encouraging participation and bringing together communities.
Over 30 Guild Members will be exhibiting and selling their original handcrafted work; textiles, ceramics, glass, jewellery, wood, furniture, paper works, books and silverware. Alongside this variety of new work showcased by our Guild members, the festival will include:
CHARLOTTE ABRAHAMS ‘RODMARTON RE-IMAGINED’ Charlotte Abrahams, renowned design writer and curator, will furnish the bedrooms with work by contemporary designer-makers responding to the spirit of Rodmarton.
RODMARTON GARDEN SCULPTURE TRAIL Mike Bigland, Guild member and experienced curator will design a sculpture trail in the beautiful gardens. Lucy Abel Smith of Fresh Air Quenington will be the selection consultant.
ARTS & CRAFTS PLANTS Julie Dolphin of Miserden Nurseries, formerly a journalist and researcher for BBC Gardeners’ World, will display and sell her selected plants and topiary. On Friday 7th September she will demonstrate planting methods with plant recommendations, linking with Rodmarton gardens. Julie will be present on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the large jousting tent on the front lawn.
THE SPIRIT OF RODMARTON PHYSICAL THEATRE PERFORMANCES Gillian Yates who teaches Physical Theatre at the University of Gloucestershire will choreograph theatre performances at specified times in the gardens on Saturday and Sunday.
RODMARTON ARTS & CRAFTS COMMUNITY HANGINGS A contemporary design for textile hangings inspired by appliqué techniques used in those created by Hilda Sexton’s community project of the 1920’s. The modern interpretation will be displayed in the Arts & Crafts Tent for the duration of Crafts Alive before installation in its permanent home.
RODMARTON GOURMET CAFÉ run by a local Chef.
HISTORIC ARTS AND CRAFTS FILMS with showings at specified times in the Chapel. Guild makers’ films will also be shown on a loop.
RODMARTON CRAFT WORKSHOPS in the marquee on the front circular lawn Wednesday 5th – Susan Early Willow Workshop Thursday 6th – Sally Davies, enamelling Friday 7th – Val Michael, leatherwork.
CHILDRENS WORKSHOPS AT THE WEEKEND Weekend workshops for children – paper crown workshops, paper boxes or children’s hats workshops. Ben, from Award winning ‘Ben’s Kitchen’, will run a children’s bread making workshop on the Sunday linking with the lovely story of guests at Rodmarton. Participants will leave with a loaf of special bread ground and made on the same day, with unique printed bags recreated from an original design.
RODMARTON TALKS in the Chapel: Wednesday 5th – Rory Young sculptor and historic buildings conservationist Thursday 6th & Friday 7th – Mary Greensted eminent Arts and Crafts Curator and Writer, with a particular expertise in Rodmarton Manor
HOUSE TOURS Selected tours will be given by one of the Rodmarton guides which will give an insight into the story of Rodmarton, as well as Margaret Biddulph’s vision that drove the creation of this unique Arts and Crafts House.
AN ARTS & CRAFTS TREASURE HUNT For adults in the garden with ‘real treasure’ created by Bill Jones, poet, writer and illustrator.
PUPPET SHOWS Isabel Lyster, local puppeteer will perform with her own created puppets and stories over the weekend.
