Work has started on a multi-million pound expansion of Carterton Leisure Centre.

A special ground-breaking ceremony was held with Carterton councillor Maxine Crossland, Chairman of West Oxfordshire District Council, putting a ceremonial spade in the ground.

The £8.3m development will include new changing rooms, a four court badminton sports hall and an indoor ‘extreme zone’ trampoline park.

The centre will benefit from a new café, its gym will be upgraded and some of the original building reconfigured to create new fitness and spinning studios along with a crèche.

The car park will also be extended. It is expected building work will be completed by November next year.

Cllr Jeanette Baker, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Health, said: “Demand for this facility in Carterton has been clear for some time and I am delighted work has started.

“I know residents will be delighted with the new facilities. There will be plenty on offer for all ages and I would encourage everyone in the town and surrounding area to get involved.”

The project is part of a 10-year, £10.3m, investment programme secured by the Council last year with GLL Better, its leisure services contractor.

Jamie Coleshill, Regional Director at GLL Better, said: “GLL exists to get more people more active more often and the second phase of the Carterton Project is a key part of this.

“We are proud to be working with the Council to transform leisure service provision in West Oxfordshire and give residents the type of facilities they deserve.”

Work will be carried out by Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd which was appointed in August, following a tendering process.

Kevin Underwood, Director of Buckingham Group Contracting said: “We are delighted to have secured this exciting contract and are looking forward to working closely with West Oxfordshire District Council, GLL Better and the design team to provide the new and enhanced, facilities at Carterton Leisure Centre which will benefit the local area for years to come.”

Carterton Leisure Centre was opened in 2003 on a site allocated as part of the Shilton Park development. The Leisure Centre had been developed with the intention to allow scope for a future extension.
